About Us

NLSF has been established to help children and adults receive services who could not otherwise afford them. Through partnerships with credentialed facilities throughout the United States, we provide one-on-one and small group behavioral therapy in home/clinic, speech therapy, and auditory and sensory training therapy in addition to scholarships.

Scholarships: NLSF provides scholarships for behavioral therapy and auditory training to children and adults nationally. Scholarships are given three times per year and applicants may apply multiple times. Recipients are selected by scholarship committee who are then approved by the NLSF Board of Directors.

What is Autism?

autismheart.jpg

Autism is a group of developmental brain disorders, collectively called autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The term "spectrum" refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of impairment, or disability, that children with ASD can have. Some children are mildly impaired by their symptoms, but others are severely disabled. Autistic Disorder (Classic), Asperger's Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) , and Rett syndrome are all diagnoses on the Autism Spectrum.

What is ADD/ADHD?Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder -- also referred to ADD or ADHD -- is a biological, brain based condition that is characterized by poor attention and distractibility and/or hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. It is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. Symptoms may continue into adolescence and adulthood. If left untreated, ADHD can lead to poor school/work performance, poor social relationships and a general feeling of low self esteem.

Dyslexia is a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read. These individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having normal intelligence. Although the disorder varies from person to person, common characteristics among people with dyslexia are difficulty with phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds), spelling, and/or rapid visual-verbal responding. In individuals with adult onset of dyslexia, it usually occurs as a result of brain injury or in the context of dementia; this contrasts with individuals with dyslexia who simply were never identified as children or adolescents. Dyslexia can be inherited in some families, and recent studies have identified a number of genes that may predispose an individual to developing dyslexia.
